About Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to wellness. It is a complementary healing system that combines a number of modalities to treat each person individually in a natural way. It recognizes the important role that lifestyle, environment, nutrition and personal history plays in the health of all people. It is about treating the individual rather than the symptoms or diseases themselves. The aim is to identify the underlying causes and work towards rectifying these.

Naturopaths believe that the body has an inherent ability to heal itself and that by combining this with the healing power of nature, balance can be restored. Prevention is just as important as treatment to achieve and maintain optimal health. As such, lifestyle advice is also given to reduce stress, decrease the toxic load on the body, promote wellbeing and increase vitality. Through these measures the client learns to take responsibility for their own health.

Naturopathy can help people with a variety of conditions, including digestive complaints, reproductive disorders, autoimmune diseases, allergies and respiratory problems. As naturopaths, treatment incorporates the whole body in a holistic manner. The client can be supported mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually through the healing process.

A combination of modalities and treatments are used in Naturopathy. These include:

Clinical Nutrition

The foundation of good health is good nutrition – basically, you are what you eat. Nutritional supplements and food as medicine are included in naturopathic treatment. Dietary recommendations and supplements are given to rectify deficiencies and excesses, and recipes and alternative foods can be suggested for those with sensitivities and allergies.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine in use. The roots, seeds, leaves, stems, bark and flowers of many medicinal plants are used in tinctures, extracts, tablets, powders, creams and liniments to treat a vast array of complaints and illnesses. They can be used to prevent or treat diseases, support and strengthen the body, reduce the severity of symptoms, restore balance and increase vitality. Often a number of herbal medicines are used together to produce a synergistic mixture that is more potent than its individual parts. Our traditional knowledge and clinical experience with these plants is constantly being supported by scientific research.

Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy is an energetic form of healing that activates the body’s own healing response. It is a holistic modality that takes into account the personal characteristics of the individual as well as the signs and symptoms that the client is presenting with. Homeopathy recognizes that the condition is specific to the client and so is the treatment. This modality is particularly safe and effective for children and acute conditions.

Flower Essences

Both Bach Flowers and Australian Bush Flowers are used for their remedial and healing qualities. They can help deal with the emotional aspects of disease by releasing negative beliefs and thoughts and clearing the way for healing to occur.

Tissue Salts

Tissue salts (or cell salts) are homeopathically prepared doses of the body's 12 essential minerals. An imbalance of these minerals in the body may result in illness at a cellular level.

Celloids

Celloids are similar to tissue salts but contain larger doses. They were developed in the 1930’s by Australian Naturopath Maurice Blackmore and are prescribed based on particular signs and symptoms within the body.

Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes are often needed to improve health and wellbeing. These include exercise, healthy work-life balance, emotional wellbeing and eliminating environmental concerns.
